Children start thinking in categories at a very early age. They know what to get when someone says, “Get your toys.” or “Get your clothes.” As they get older, they identify higher level categories by actions (things that fly, sail, growl, etc.) and by modifiers (things that are sweet, sour, hot, cold). These activities combine higher level categories with inferences (hints) and content clues (specific vocabulary).
